It didn't quite take a reboot, but that would have worked as well. Looks
like I didn't pay close enough attention to my task manager process
listings. Hidden amongst the top list of system processes were three
undead instances of emacs. No idea how they got there. Problem finally
solved. And boy do I feel silly for not catching it earlier... Thanks
for the help. :)

Sure? Did you try it after a reboot? I have no problems using hardlinks
and I can't think of any reason for your problem besides a process
locking the file. The fact that the Windows `del' command refuses to
delete the file is a hint either.
